The dreaded 16  is said to be worst hand. Nobody wants hitting the hand because they are afraid to bust. Many are so scared that they stand right away not paying any attention to the dealer’s face up card.

If the 16 is a pair of 8’s, the majority of players don’t want to split when the dealer’s up card is a 9, 10, or ace since there is a chance to lose two bets in place of one.  And there is the 16 made up with an Ace counted as 11 (i.e., soft 16).
