Bingo was originally known as 'beano' because beans were utilized as markers for the numbers. It originated in a carnival off of Atlanta, Georgia USA in 1929. Edwin S. Lowe, a New York salesman, renamed it bingo when he misheard the word being shouted for bingo.

 

Lowe saw potential in the game. He hired a Columbia University math professor – Carl Leffler – to make more combinations of bingo cards.The professor came up with 6,000 combinations of bingo cards with non-repeating groups.
